Easyjet will temporarily close its base at Ljubljana Airport (Slovenia’s capital) at the beginning of this winter season. It only operates to 2 destinations from the airport: London Gatwick and Berlin Schönefeld. Flights from Ljubljana to Gatwick will be suspended on the 23rd of October whereas flights between Lubljana and Berlin have already been suspended until Summer 2021. The airline is supposed to return to the airport on the 11th of December. This closure is mainly due to quarantines and travel restrictions between the UK and Slovenia. This will leave Slovenia’s main airport without a LCC since over a decade as Transavia (a Dutch LCC) and Wizz Air have likewise suspended their operations from the airport. Easyjet intends to start flights from Ljubljana to London Luton on the same day as the recommencement of its operations at the airport, but services to Gatwick will resume on the 17th of December. Easyjet was forced to close 3 major bases (Newcastle, Stansted and Southend) earlier on this year and has apparently sold 30% of its fleet and leased it back, after owning 80% of its fleet at the start of the pandemic. Things are not looking good for the UK’s n°1 LCC. 7th of October 2020.
